About the Artist

Hello! My name is Spencer Gibbons. I work primarily with drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture mediums to capture scenes and evoke a reaction from the viewer.

I am a Brookings, South Dakota native, with a family background in rural farming and a focus on land and wildlife conservation. Compiling my life experiences from home, work, and in the classroom, I developed a preference working with my hands to create physically tangible works of art.

My artwork has evolved through experimentation with various mediums and processes with each opening new avenues for me to express my creativity. I have created drawings and paintings of three-dimensional futuristic scenes depicting space and architecture. Through formal courses in photography, my interest in creating still shots grew leading me to develop large landscape paintings. Many of my recent paintings depict natural landscapes or scenes I capture through my own photography. Working from a photo, I decide whether to distort the image to manipulate space, tilt the landscape to exaggerate forms and subject matter occupying the space, or implement both techniques into my composition. I also similar apply methods to my drawings and sculptures in such a manner to grasp the viewer’s attention.
